يكي از مشكلات عمده دامپروري در اواخر فصل زمستان و اوايل بهار كمبود علوفه و خوراك جهت رفع احتياجات نگهداري دامها مي باشد که از علوفه سبز جو (قصيل جو)(خسیل جو)جهت تأمين بخشي از خوراك علوفه اي دام ها استفاده می گردد.
گیاه جو در مقایسه با سایر علوفه میزان آب کمتری مصرف می‌کند به طوری که برای هر هکتار زمین کشت جو، حدود ۳۵۰۰ متر مکعب آب مصرف می‌کند.
در کشت جو به صورت قصیل، وقتی دانه جو از مرحله شیری وارد مرحله خمیری می‌شود، محصول برداشت و به ۲ صورت تازه‌خوری و یا خرد شده و سیلو شده به مصرف دام می‌رسد که برای دام بسیار خوش‌خوراک است.
یکی از غلاتی که اغلب در برنامه غذایی دام و طیور از آن ها استفاده می شود، جو است که علاوه بر هضم سریع و آسانی که در دستگاه گوارشی دام دارد، می تواند خواص بسیاری را به همراه داشته باشند.
